Kelly Rowan: Perception and reality

She’s had a child in her 40s, and now she’s playing a male fantasy character in her 40s in Perception. So what’s the reality for this working single mom?

Kelly Rowan thought she pretty much scored the role of a lifetime as Kirsten Cohen on The O.C.; turns out playing a mom on television was only prepping her for real life. Now, as a single mom to a four-year-old daughter whose name she refuses to divulge to the public, Rowan claims to have found the best of both worlds.

In her new summer series, Perception, Rowan plays a male fantasy character alongside fellow Canadian Eric McCormack. She has a flexible enough schedule to still have time with her daughter, and despite fostered fear from her younger days that there were no good roles for older woman, claims she’s never felt better.

How do you see age? Is it just a number or is it something you think about at all?

When I was coming up to 40 and working in Hollywood there’s so much press about there not being work for women over 40. When I was doing The O.C., I started producing and doing that kind of thing, one because I wanted to challenge myself and have other creative outlets, and I also did it because I wanted to create work for women and work for myself as well.

Has your perspective on that changed?

The irony is that now that I had a child in my forties, I’m still working in my forties and I’m playing a male fantasy in my forties. What I seemed to be preparing myself for because of outside influence hasn’t happened and I’ve been able to continue to do what I love to do. (Meet other women who decided to follow their passions.) So do I think about age? I think about age because we think about age, but right now I probably feel the best I’ve felt about myself in my life. You can own who you are in your forties, you’re not trying to be somebody you think you should be. I think you’re just more comfortable in your own skin. It is a great place to be.

Kelly to star in a new tv movie!

Kelly is currently filming a new movie in Dundurn, called RUFUS:

Principal Photography begins on RUFUS
UK teen actor Rory Saper leads cast in David Schultz’ third feature film

February 8, 2012 (SASKATOON) – A lonely supernatural teenager discovers what it means to be human in director David Schultz’ third original feature film, RUFUS, that began principal photography last week in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. Produced by Saskatoon’s Anand Ramayya (KarmaFilm) and Calgary’s Bruce Harvey (Illusions Entertainment), the production introduces London’s emerging star Rory Saper as Rufus, the eternal teenager seeking peace and belonging in the small mid-western town of Conrad.

Saper is surrounded by a cast of veteran and emerging Canadian talent including David James Elliott (JAG, CSI: NY) as Sheriff Hugh Wade, Richard Harmon (Judas Kiss, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) as the town bully “Clay”, Merritt Patterson (Percy Jackson) as “Tracy”, the uninhibited love interest next door, and Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy, Resident Evil) as Bristol Anderson executive “Aaron Van Dusen” who claims Rufus is the property of the pharmaceutical giant. Kelly Rowan (The O.C.) stars as “Jennifer” the grieving mother of a lost son who takes Rufus in as her own.

“Rufus is a haunting examination of the secrets we all keep and the accumulative toll they take on our daily lives,” director Dave Schultz comments. “Our story is an intimate study of the desires and demons that haunt our souls.” Producer Anand Ramayya calls Rufus “a fresh spin on the vampire film that deals with real teen and human issues.” “It’s always a pleasure to work on a film you believe in creatively,” says producer Bruce Harvey, “and an even greater pleasure when you can do it with friends.” Director of photography, Craig Wrobleski (Heartland, 45 RPM) comments on the town of Dundurn as “perfectly suited for the fictional town of Conrad in “Rufus”. I’m looking forward to capturing the area and the beautiful Saskatchewan light.”

Rufus shoots in Dundurn January 30th to February 28th and will be theatrically distributed in Canada by Entertainment One. The project has received production financing from Telefilm Canada, SaskFilm & Video Development Corporation, Shaw Rocket Fund, Rogers Telefund, the Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit Program, the Alberta Multimedia Development Fund, and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and developed with the participation of Telefilm, Saskfilm and the Harold Greenberg Fund. Presold to The Movie Network, Movie Central and Saskatchewan Communications Network “Rufus” will air on Canadian Television following its theatrical release.

TNT Begins Production on Perception

perception banner
TNT began production this week on its intriguing new original series Perception, starring Emmy(R) and Screen Actors Guild Award(R) winner Eric McCormack (Will & Grace, Who Is Clark Rockefeller?). The series about an eccentric neuroscientist who helps solve complex criminal cases also stars Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), Arjay Smith (The Day After Tomorrow) and Kelly Rowan (The O.C.). TNT has ordered 10 episodes of Perception, which will join the network’s lineup in summer 2012.

In Perception, McCormack plays Dr. Daniel Pierce, a neuroscientist and professor recruited to help the federal government crack difficult cases. His intimate knowledge of human behavior and masterful understanding of the mind give him an extraordinary ability to read people, but his eccentric view of the world and less-than-stellar social skills can often interfere with his work.

Cook co-stars as FBI agent Kate Moretti, Pierce’s former student and the person responsible for recruiting him to work for the government. Smith plays Max Lewicki, the teaching assistant whose primary job is to keep Pierce in line and on task. Rowan is Natalie Vincent, Pierce’s best friend and every bit his intellectual equal. In addition, award-winning actor LeVar Burton (Roots, Star Trek: The Next Generation) will play a recurring role as Paul Haley, a dean at the university.

Perception, which comes to TNT from ABC Studios, was created by executive producer Kenneth Biller (Star Trek: Voyager, Smallville) and co-executive producer Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Enterprise), with McCormack serving as producer. Alan Poul (Six Feet Under) directed and served as executive producer for the pilot. David Eagleman, a professor at Baylor School of Medicine and author of the New York Times Top 10 bestseller Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, serves as a technical consultant on the series.
